Drummers,
dancers and children waving flags will all form part of the colourful and
dramatic service of welcome for the new Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham -
who will officially take up his role at the end of February. More than 1,200
visitors are expected to attend the installation service at Southwell Minster
for the Rt Revd Paul Butler at 3pm on Saturday 27th February 2010. See full

PLEASE NOTE – welcome services for the new Bishop of Southwell &
Nottingham
In
addition to the Installation of the new Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham,
the Rt Revd Paul Butler at Southwell Minster on 27th February
– which is a ticketed event – there are two other opportunities for
everyone to join in welcoming him at two separate services in March. The
Archdeacons are encouraging churches to abandon their usual evening services on
one of these dates in favour of attending a welcome service.
The
first will be at St Mary’s, Nottingham on Sunday 7th March and the second
will be at Worksop Priory on Sunday 14th March - both services will start at
4pm and all are welcome.

The Archbishops’ Council Mission and Public Affairs Division has updated
its guidance note on countering far right political parties, extremist groups
and racist politics. The guidance note, first produced in 2007, was prepared in
response to a number of requests for advice on relating to political parties
and other extremist groups that promote divisive, intolerant or racist
politics. For further information go to: http://cofe.anglican.org/news/pr1710.html

Ending
the detention of children in the UK: The Sanctuary Pledge
The
General Election this year will be closely fought and many new MP’s
elected. The run up to the election offers us a unique opportunity to quiz prospective
candidates about the issues which matter to us. Building on the
recommendations of the Independent Asylum Commission, CITIZENS for
Sanctuary have partnered with almost every major national faith and
denomination in the UK, from the Church of England to the Chief Rabbi, Muslim
Council of Britain to the Salvation Army, Catholic Bishops' Conference to the
Methodists, all committed to backing the Sanctuary Pledge. The Pledge is
simple - five key asks, the most important of which is for politicians to
finally end the detention of children. You can read the details of the
Pledge and its partners on the website: www.sanctuarypledge.org.uk.
A
vital part in this national initiative is that in each constituency the
Prospective Parliamentary Candidates are asked to comment on the 5 asks,
including their view on the detention of children, and to sign the Sanctuary
Pledge.
A
training day for people from the East Midlands (from Leicester to Sheffield)
which will equip and enable everyone who attends to follow this through in
their constituency, is being held on Saturday 13th February at St Nic’s
Church, Maid Marian Way, Nottingham NG1 6AE from 11am. If you would like to be
involved please check and register on the website, or simply come along. More

Vocations
Day Conference
The
Committee for Minority Ethnic Concerns (CMEAC) within the Church of England
seeks to promote minority ethnic vocations. There is a day conference to be
held at Queen’s College in Birmingham on Saturday 20th February which
aims to encourage those who may either be taking the first tentative steps in
seeking God about their calling to ministry within the Anglican Church or others
who may have felt a calling for some time and want to explore it further. There
may be others who should be considering this calling but who need encouraging
in recognising their God-given gifts for ministry in this area. This conference
provides the opportunity to explore further, ask questions, share stories and
experiences, meet other minority ethnic Anglicans and learn about vocational
processes. Is there anyone you could encourage to attend this conference.
Further details are available from Catriona in the Department for Development
at Dunham House (01636 817232 or catriona@southwell.anglican.org).

Diocesan Youth Confirmation - Sunday 9th May at 6pm
Deadline for candidates names – Friday 12th
February
The
Diocese are planning a confirmation service aimed specifically at young people,
in May 2010. The idea is to create an opportunity for young people to come
together and share their journey of faith. As we accompany them we will
enable them to be involved in preparing for and leading their confirmation
service. If you could let Angela Brymer Heywood or Jenny Andrews know the
candidates names by Friday 12th February that would really help us to include
them in the events and activities from the outset of the process.
However, we do appreciate that during their ongoing confirmation preparation in
the local area some candidates may decide that this is not the right time for
them and drop out. Angela Brymer Heywood,
